Shirley Community Hall Kitchen Refurbishment Case Study
Creating a Modern, Hygienic Community Kitchen Designed for Weekly Meal Service
When Shirley Community Hall approached Abraxas, their existing kitchen was no longer meeting the needs of the busy community space. The kitchen had become tired, dated and difficult to maintain, despite being used regularly to prepare and serve hot meals for the local community each week.
The client wanted to modernise the space and improve hygiene, safety and efficiency, but without creating a fully stainless steel commercial kitchen environment. It was important that the finished space still felt warm, welcoming and suitable for a community setting.
Abraxas designed a practical solution that balanced commercial-grade durability with a brighter, more approachable aesthetic.
A Practical, Hygienic Design Approach
- Commercial food-grade non-slip flooring
- White PVC hygienic wall cladding
- Improved ventilation systems
- Replacement of older gas appliances with new energy-efficient electric equipment
Energy Efficiency & Improved Safety
As part of the refurbishment, the existing gas equipment was removed and replaced with modern electric catering appliances. This not only improved energy efficiency but also enhanced operational safety and reduced ongoing maintenance requirements.
The installation of non-slip commercial flooring also created a safer environment for those working within the kitchen during busy meal preparation periods.

Transforming the Space
One of the most noticeable changes was the overall atmosphere of the kitchen. What was previously a dark, tired-looking room was transformed into a brighter, cleaner and far more welcoming environment that better reflects the important role Shirley Community Hall plays within the local community.
The finished kitchen now provides a practical, hygienic and efficient workspace that is built to support regular meal service for years to come, while still maintaining the warm and accessible feel the client wanted to preserve.
